ROAD TO SUCCESS: 8 Very Challenging Driving Aspects Beginner Drivers Must Learn

Good driving is not equivalent to the cool driving that makes people cheer. Rather, it means safe driving while knowing how to observe and follow the rules set by the places where you drive in, to and through. It means you are skillful and careful while, if you insist, you can also look cool.

Beginner drivers must be guided by driving experts from a driving school or by professional drivers in the family. You cannot just learn how to drive like the way you learn how to cook. You really should have proper training and information if you want to be a good driver with a license you worked hard to earn.

Just like many things you have to learn first before you happily achieve, learning how to drive is not easy at all! That is why drivers are really amazing! Keep in mind that if you aim to be a driver of high quality, you must go through some challenges which are really part of learning driving.

If you are already a professional driver, you know what gave you a hard time while still learning as a beginner driver before. Now, if you are an aspiring driver or a beginner driver, here are 8 very challenging driving aspects that you must and you will learn!

[1] USING THE PEDALS FOR THE CAR TO FUNCTION

A vehicle could be automatic or manual. There is a big difference between these types of vehicles when it comes to making them move.

Automatic vehicles have two foot pedals only: the accelerator (also called gas pedal) and the brake pedal. You can use just one foot for both pedals and let the other rest.

On the other hand, for manual vehicles, there are three pedals: the accelerator, the brake and the clutch pedal. You cannot let any foot rest because you have to manage all pedals from left, then middle to right.

The foot pedals for manual cars are tougher to handle since there is a right timing for the clutch to smoothly bite and transmit power from the engine to the wheels of the vehicle or the drivetrain. It takes a lot of practice to master this  because you really need to get used to it. Moreover, different vehicles have different clutches, so you have to adjust every time.

[2] SHIFTING GEARS

For automatic vehicles, the gear stick has D for Drive, P for Park and R for Reverse. You can clearly see the letters and understand their meanings, however, the challenge could be remembering their order. Sometimes, you might be confused as you cannot look at it while driving, especially if you try driving different vehicles with different gear styles.

Shifting gears is much harder in manual vehicles. The R for Reverse is retained, but there are numbers from 1 to 5 (until 4 only for some or 6 for some) which represent the gears you can shift to. You use them while speeding up or slowing down with your foot pedals.

You start from 1st gear if the car moves from a stopped position. It has the least speed. A lower gear allows more engine braking. Higher gears such as the 5th is for running at a very high speed which can be used on highways.

You shift through gears as necessary based on the place or surface you are driving in. Driving upwards in steep grounds and driving downwards require different gears. These are so important to master, so you will avoid road accidents.

[3] PROPERLY CONTROLLING STEERING WHEEL

While the steering wheel could be the easiest to learn for some beginner drivers, it becomes a trying point for some too. It’s when they find it difficult to control the movement of the steering wheel.

Even slight shaking or instability of the steering wheel can be felt through the whole car and by everyone in it. Passengers might feel inconvenient and dizzy if it is not properly held.

Furthermore, the steering wheel enables you to align the car on the road while moving and in the parking lot while parking. Without a good control over it, you might move out of lanes without intentionally wanting to. That might lead to road mishaps which you should completely avoid.

[4] SMOOTH BRAKING

The car’s brakes are very crucial. Slowing down and stopping are important to prevent any possible road troubles. You use the brake when someone is going to cross the street, when you are approaching a red traffic light, when you are behind a vehicle and many more situations. It is really inevitable.

Along with those details, you must also consider learning how to make the car stop or slow down SMOOTHLY. Yes, that word is capitalized because many drivers do not care about that when they really must! Everybody hates it when the car jerks whenever the brake pedal is stepped on. It eventually causes the head to ache and become dizzy, especially for passengers.

Beginner drivers are understable, yet as you diligently learn and study driving, improvement must be seen and felt. Make every braking smooth.

[5] UNDERSTANDING LINE MARKINGS BY HEART

Not a part of the car itself but of the road, line markings are to be followed all the time. They tell directions, instructions and restrictions for drivers and pedestrians to be guided.

Some beginner drivers find it difficult to memorize the meanings of all or some line markings. Especially when some are not too commonly seen anywhere, they tend to get confused. That is why some beginner drivers get misunderstood by other drivers when they commit mistakes on the road and why they sometimes receive tickets due to violations. Though some traffic enforcers understand, some are strict to let them pass.

Another problem of some beginner drivers is when they cannot clearly see the line markings when they seem a bit erased. While some professional drivers might instantly comprehend despite the erasure, beginners are not the same. Worse is when they are not able to see the line markings accurately because of the car’s high speed or because another vehicle is blocking the line markings.

Understanding the line markings by heart is fulfilling, and it’s challenging without a doubt.

[6] PARKING

You cannot just drive and drive without knowing how to park the car. Parking is resting the car, yet sometimes, it takes a lot of tiring reversals and moving forwards and sidewards before you fit the car into the parking slot.

The level of the parking challenge also depends on the size of the vehicle slot. Some have irregular spaces which can annoy drivers. Not to mention, there are different parking styles depending on the location: parallel parking, angle parking and perpendicular parking. They have varying difficulty levels.

Some parking spaces do not have line markings, so it’s more demanding for beginner drivers to measure the spaces they are consuming.

Parking is one of the driving aspects wherein you will need a lot of persistence. Really, it can be exhausting before resting!

[7] REMEMBERING THE BUTTONS INSIDE THE CAR

You have to know and fully understand the names and the functions of all the buttons found inside the vehicle you are driving. They will let you operate the signal lights, other various lights, the wiper, the side mirrors, the locks, the air conditioning, the sound system and many more.

The most important to learn though are the buttons for the lights. Some are not buttons but levers and sticks that you must pull up and down for them to work. Without turning on the signal light button for turning left, you might get into crashes and misunderstandings on the road. Truly, it is an essential to commit them all to your memory.

[8] PAYING ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING ON THE ROAD

All of the above-mentioned things and so much more, which might have not been included in this list but are considered struggles by some beginner drivers, are to be paid attention to when you are driving. See how challenging the whole thing is!

Drivers must always be alert and flexible. You should know how to check out the side mirrors while controlling the steering wheel and changing gears and also talking to your mom. That’s actually just one scenario, but there’s so much more to encounter and experience when you drive!

Undeniably, it is a challenge to set your mind and heart totally concentrated on everything about driving. That’s the reason why when you are able to do them all without hassle, it’s absolutely a wonderful accomplishment!
