Our favorite time of the year just passed by, aka Halloween, but that doesn’t mean we can’t watch horror movies anymore. Do you remember the year 2010 and its revival of horror and thriller? We saw many new names take over the big and small screens and also had us sleepless for many nights to come, but 2020 has completely redefined the whole genre. Almost every week has seen a new horror movie take over the screen. Sometimes we’d see monsters slashing, and other times it would be haunted hotels. Either way, 2020 offered us a whole buffet of scary movies, and we’re not complaining.
Here’s the thing about horror movies. They really don’t care about the audience’s tolerance of fear. They will make sure you clench your fists tight enough to leave marks in your palm, have you gripping the seat because you don’t have a cushion to hide behind, and be so full of jump scares that your last nerve starts hurting. But truth be told, these sorts of movies are the ones that make it to the top. They help you embrace your fear openly.

What exactly can go wrong in a Zoom call? We’ve all learned the importance of Zoom calls for interaction thanks to quarantine, but we never knew how terrifying a simple catch up between friends could get. This movie follows exactly the same story, except with a twist. The classic found footage is about six friends who join a Zoom call to light candles and hold a séance, but things take a drastic turn instantly when some evil spirits invade their homes. If you’ve seen paranormal activity, Rec, or any other found footage film, you might notice how incredibly refined and directed this movie is. Rob Savage has refined the whole concept so perfectly that it’s exciting to see what he has next in store for us.
- Paranormal Activity
This movie holds a well-deserved spot on this list. The 2007 horror classic redefined found footage concepts for the industry and was labeled as the movie where things got serious. The first movie from the series introduces us to a couple who face odd coincidences and events in their house. The guy also sets up a camera to record any signs of paranormal activity, and he sure does when he finds out there is someone else definitely living with them in the house. This nerve-wracking production will have you on the edge of your seat.
- A Quiet Place
What’s more terrifying than raising your kids in a world full of supernatural and evil forces? The power pack couple, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt star in this silent horror as a couple of 3 kids who have to live their lives in silence and fear (literally) to survive; for a single sound can mean a step closer to death for them. A single footstep sound or a door creaking can put an end to it all in this post-apocalyptic world for the Abbott family. This movie will have you hold your breath out of nerve-wracking tension. John Krasinski’s first horror production definitely deserves a watch in 2020.
The original Saw movies are nothing short of brilliant. Although critics might deem it as bold and gross, it doesn’t undermine the fact that it’s a bit different from every other horror movie out there. The movie eerily shows how sometimes the monsters are humans. What would we do to save our lives? Unfortunately, each character in the movie is a player in Jigsaw’s mind-twisting game where they are put in situations and forced to do the unimaginable to save their lives. One of the biggest names in the genre, Saw, is classical scare if you’re in the mood for some twisted nightmares.
- The Witch
From the very first scene, Robert Eggers has us terrified about what’s going to happen next. The Witch revolves around a Puritan family that ends up in the dark scary woods to reach the farm. But safe to say, they don’t make it there. A series of unfortunate and horrifying events take place after a slow burn of shock and tension. You can’t quite put your finger on why there’s a sense of horror lurking exactly, but that’s the beauty of this film.
- Get Out
This modern masterpiece is layered with the perfect amount of stubborn humor, horror, and deep-rooted perplexing truths. The story is about Chris, a mid-20’s photographer who’s on his way to New York to meet his girlfriend’s parents. Nervous as hell, Chris asks his girlfriend whether her parents knew he was black, to whom she responds or dismisses (you decide) with the fact that her dad would’ve voted for Obama again and again if he could. Chris is relieved, but he doesn’t know what’s waiting for him. This movie speaks more about the real horrifying truth underlying America’s politics: white privilege, and the country’s deconstructed take on racism.
- The Exorcist
This movie has to fall in the top 5 horror movies list every time. It’s been 40 years to its release, but it still gives everyone the creeps. Regan is the daughter of a famous actress who starts playing with an Ouija board in the basement until things turn intense, and an unwelcome guest takes over the daughter. William Friedkin’s masterpiece is nothing short of unpredictably horrifying. You will find yourself watching The Exorcist over and over again to feel the terror in your bones once again.
