1. Choose Your Budget

The first thing you’ll want to do is set your budget. Figure out how much you want to spend on the laptop and stick to that budget.

Online shopping sites usually have a drop-down menu that will allow you to select the price range of the units you want to see. You can use that so that you won’t be bombarded with tons of units while you shop.

2. Select Your Operating System

The next thing you need to do is select your operating system. The three main operating systems are Windows, MAC OS, and UNIX. Most Chromebooks run off of the UNIX platform. You might be interested in a Chromebook if your budget is low.

Chromebooks are usually extremely cheap as compared to other laptops, and they can last a long time. Windows units are still very popular, but their cost is much higher than the average Chromebook. However, Windows units still have a lot of features that Chromebooks don’t yet support.

Mac OS systems are probably the highest priced systems on the market, but their specs don’t always measure up other laptops. It’s up to you what you’re most comfortable with from a financial and user-friendliness aspect.

3. Make a List of Features You Want

You don’t need much if you only intend to browse and send emails. You’ll need much more capability if you’re going to do any gaming, or you intend to store a lot of information on the computer.

4. Search Different Brands

Visit some popular retailers and have a look at their laptop inventory. See what appeals to you visually and mechanically. Select at least three units that are within your price range and research them.
