How Would Online Education Impact Traditional Education

Online education platforms are not a new concept, they have been in the market for a decade or so. Earlier, they were always considered to be an alternative to ‘coaching classes’ or tuitions and weren’t taken to be in the same league as the traditional physical attendance-based education. However, the COVID pandemic in 2020 has changed the perspective of the people. Masses of students who have chosen online education portals for studying during this period, have discovered some benefits to this form of education over the traditional one and are now considering online education to be in the same league as the ‘traditional education’.

To discuss the validity of the above statement, it is needed to compare the advantages and disadvantages of one form of education platform to the other. 

Advantages of Online Education Over Traditional Education

Perhaps the major advantage of Online education is its availability, the online content is available across the country, anywhere and at any time. All one needs is a suitable electronic device, internet access, and subscriptions to the portals. 

Eliminating the need to be physically present at the venue of the class ensures that the students at the remote locations also have access to quality study materials and lectures

  • The Pace of Studying

Traditional education classes cater to a group of students. One of the disadvantages of this method is that not every student learns at the same pace. For example, During a traditional class few students may take twice the time to grasp a concept that what it takes for most of them but since classes cater to a group, the educator quickly moves on to the next topic. As a result, the student becomes quickly disinterested in the new topic.

Now, online education portals supply the student with pre-recorded media and written material which the student can visit as per his needs. The important thing is that the next topic begins only when the student is confident about the previous one.

Unlike traditional classes, which cater to a group, online portals also include one to one teacher-student  interaction in the form of personalized classes and queries classes

  • Quality of Education

The curriculum of online courses is designed by taking inputs from the professors of prestigious institutes and appropriately so since a student time would want to learn in the best possible way.

  • Great for working individuals 

Online education platforms are a boon for working individuals since there is no need to visit a specific location for attending classes. Add to that the ability to study whenever one has time on his hands, digital education becomes a lucrative package that no traditional mode of study can match. This is why distance education and online preparations are gaining more and more traction among working individuals in recent years.

  • Online test, quizzes, and other materials to test one’s progress

For students preparing for competitive exams or for any certification exam, the ability to test one’s knowledge, to know their grasp upon a topic is very important. Not only do online portals provide periodic tests but also provide a healthy amount of questions on the completion of each topic. Some portals also conduct all India tests among the subscribers so that an aspirant can estimate the level of competition and his standing in it.

Disadvantages of Online Education Over Traditional Education

There are not many downsides to online education over traditional but a few of them are –

  • Consistent High-Speed Internet 

For attending online classes and viewing lectures, a high-speed internet connection is a must.

  • Learning is limited by the English language

While some Online education portals do offer content in the local language, most of them focus on a pan-India scale, and as such their content is only available in the English Language. For students who are not even familiar with the basic English language, this mode is seldom an option of studying.

After briefly considering both options, what can one say about how online education impacts traditional education? The short answer is considerable and it makes sense given the advantages of the platform. The favorable disposition towards online education can be easily seen in society, with the exponential increase in the number of subscribers during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

So, to conclude online education has proven itself to be a worthy alternative to traditional education and while it may not completely replace that traditional structure today for many, for some it already has.
