The Ultimate Guide to Choosing a Laptop

According to a survey about the U.S. Census, about 78% of households had a laptop or desktop.

If you want to join these millions of people and get a laptop for yourself, you may wonder what factors you should consider when choosing a laptop. There is a lot to think about, and you could spend hours researching laptops!

Thankfully, we know all the things that you should watch out for! Keep reading to find out what your next laptop should have!

Operating System

The operating system will be one of the most important things to consider when you choose a laptop. This will be the interface that you use when you power up your laptop.

Windows is one of the most popular operating systems found on laptops, like Lenovo. Windows is often on the fastest laptops, and they’re faster than most of the other operating systems out there. That’s one reason that gamers love laptops with Windows.

Windows is updated frequently to ensure that it’s secure and always working well.  A lot of apps work with Windows, and most games and business software can run with windows.

Mac Operating System is found exclusively on Apple products, like MacBooks. If you love this operating system, you’ll have to get an Apple computer, which some people are fine with.

Mac is very user friendly, but if you’ve used Windows for most of your life, you might find it difficult to get used to the interface.

Many businesses also use Macs, and there is still a bunch of software that will work this software again. Apple is very proud of their products, so they make sure that even their operating system is straightforward and easy to use.

This operating system will come installed on every Apple product, so you won’t have to download it yourself.

MacOS is also very secure, and many viruses will get stopped before they can get into your computer.

The screen is also something that you’ll have to consider when you buy your laptop.

There are some laptop screens that are touch screens as well, which can be helpful for navigating faster.

Touch Screen

If you’re getting a laptop that can be both a tablet and a laptop, you should make sure it has a touch screen as well.

However, some laptops have a touch screen as well even though they can’t convert to a tablet. Many touchscreens are available on Windows laptops and some Chromebooks, but Mac doesn’t offer any touch screens right now.

Another factor of the screen to consider is the resolution of the screen. If you get a laptop with a higher resolution, you’ll have better quality for your screen. The pixels are normally used to measure resolution.

The standard resolution size is 1920×1080. This should be the minimum that you get because it’s a full HD. You’ll be able to play video games and watch HD movies with no issue at all.

You’ll also want to consider the size of the screen. It depends on what you’re going to be using it for.

Laptop screens can be as small as 11 inches, but as big as 17 inches. They’re also normally measured diagonally, so keep that in mind.

If you’re going to be gaming, make sure that you get a laptop with a large screen. Unless you have another monitor, you’ll want to make sure that you can see all of it.

A big laptop screen will also be great for people who are going to do a lot of work on it and have multiple windows and tabs open.

Graphics Card

Unless you’re going to be playing video games or running a lot of high programs, you won’t need a super fancy graphics card.

The graphics card works with the processor to make sure that the graphics run smoothly, quickly, and don’t lag.

There are all kinds of different graphic chips, just like the Intel processors. Most of the cheaper ones include the Nvidia MX250 and GTX 1650 GPU. This should be enough for most regular computing things.

For a middle-range graphics card, you can get an RTX 2050 or 2060 graphics card. If you want something that is on the higher end, you should get one that is RTX 2070 or 2080.

While Nvidia is a popular graphics card, AMD is another manufacturer of the graphics card. This is Apple’s favorite choice, and you’ll be able to find this in most MacBook laptops.

The processor is the brain of the laptop, and it works with all the other parts of the computer to let you run complex software and run faster. It will also determine how much you can run at the same time.

Most laptops come with Intel processors, but there are different levels of the quality of the processor.

If you are going to be gaming or running a lot of programs on the computer, you’ll need a strong processor to be able to run everything. If you don’t want to get a better processor, you should try and get a better graphics card to help compensate for the lower level processor.

The keyboard is also something you’ll want to consider, especially if you’re going to be doing a lot of writing or software coding.

You’d be surprised how many laptops don’t have comfortable keyboards, so you should try and find one that has good quality keys. If you don’t get a good keyboard, it could break down, or the keys could be jammed leaving your laptop difficult to use.

When looking at the keyboards, find one that feels comfortable for you and has enough space around the keys. You want to be sure there is some space so you don’t hit multiple keys at once, but you also need them to be close enough for your fingers to reach.

There are also some keyboards that are backlit and some that aren’t. Right now, you might not think that it’s that important, but it makes it incredibly easier to type if you don’t have a lot of light.

Some of the bigger laptops also have keypads on the side, which can be great if you’re going to be doing a lot of calculations.

The RAM in your laptop will be very important if you’re going to be gaming or using apps like photo-editing softwares. Some laptops come with the option to upgrade the RAM later on, but most don’t.

So you should really consider the RAM before you make the decision on a laptop. You’ll likely only have a little bit of RAM if you get a laptop that also doubles as a tablet. Outside of that, most laptops come with a minimum of 8GB of RAM, which should be enough for most computing tasks.

Lastly, you’ll need to consider the storage on the computer. In the past, there only used to be only hard drives, but now there are also solid-state drives (SSD) to choose from.

The hard drives are normally found in laptops that are bigger and bulky. They are normally cheaper when it factors into the price of the laptop, but they’re also slower and sometimes noisier than the other parts.

A hard drive comes up to 1TB, and normally the minimum you can get is 128GB.

An SSD is a lot newer and faster than a hard drive, and it’s a lot quieter when it runs on your laptop. They aren’t as bulky and don’t weigh as much, which also helps to increase the portability of the laptop.

However, the SSDs don’t give you as much space as a hard drive can. The minimum is 128GB, and the biggest, most affordable option would be a 512 GB SSD.

There are some 1 and 2 TB SSDs, but these cost a lot more than a hard drive. If cost is an important factor for you, you might want to consider just getting a hard drive instead.
